Ultimate Guide to Off-Page SEO

What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO is referring to taking steps to improve your SEO that are not directly on your website. In most cases, this is the hardest part of SEO, and unfortunately, it is the most important.

Off-page SEO mostly involves link building. This is getting other websites to link to your website inside their content. You want to get as many of these links as possible from high-authority websites. If you can get these sites to link to you, it will likely improve your rankings. 

Why is off-page SEO important?

Off-page SEO is so important because search engines make it important. Google said that backlinks are one of the most important rankings factors.

These backlinks from other websites count like “votes”. If you have more votes or links from other websites, then there is a good chance your rankings are going to improve.

It isn’t quite as easy as that though. There are a lot of things that go into link building such as do-follow links, quantity of links, and quality of links. The goal is to get as many high quality, do-follow links as possible. Getting links from spammy sites won’t help you out too much.

It’s also important to get backlinks from websites that are relevant to your niche. For example, if you are trying to implement SEO for a plastic surgery company, it would help you to get backlinks from other medical-related websites. 


I am going to go over some of my favorite strategies to build links back to my website. I have used each of these strategies to successfully build backlinks to my website.

Competitors’ links

What is it?

This was the first strategy that I used, and it works well when done right. For the competitors’ links strategy, I try to duplicate all the links that my ranking competitors have gotten. I find the backlinks that the pages in the top ten for my target keyword have and try to get the same links.

How to do it?

The hardest part of this strategy is to find your competitors’ backlinks. It is easy to do with an Ahrefs or SEMRush account though. With one of these accounts, you can see all the backlinks these pages have. 

What I usually do then is reach out to each one of those websites and let them know about my resource. Since they are linking to similar pages, there is a good chance they will also want to link to my page as well.

Broken link building

What is it?

Broken link building has a high success rate because you are helping the website that you are reaching out to. This is when you find websites that are linking to a page that no longer exists (a broken link). After that, you reach out to them to let them know, and you give them a resource to replace that broken link.

The nice thing about this is that you are helping them in two different ways. You are letting them know about their broken link and you are also giving them the resource right away to replace that. This means they won’t have to try to find something to replace it.

Unless your content is low-quality, there are few reasons they won’t take you up on that.

How to do it?

The hardest part about this strategy is finding the websites with broken links. You can do this with Ahrefs’ content explorer and site explorer. You can either use the site explorer to find all the broken links on a specific website, or you can use the content explorer to find pages about a topic that are no longer there. This allows you to reach out to all the sites linking to those broken links.

Guest Posting

What is it?

This one is pretty self-explanatory, but it is still a valuable way to get backlinks to your website. This is when you make a guest post on another website that includes a link to your website. This strategy is more time consuming, but it works well because you get a backlink to your site, and you also get the exposure of having your content on another site.

How to do it?

You will want to find high-quality websites that are related to your niche to write guest posts for. You can search for these websites on Google by running a search for specific types of sites. I like to make a list of all the high-quality sites that I find, that I think I can provide a valuable blog post for.

The important thing here is to make sure that you guest post is providing value. Many sites do not accept guest posts because they have experienced someone using this strategy to get a link, and then providing a low-quality article. Be sure to put the work in to write a high-quality article. Remember, they don’t have to post your article, so you need to give them something they want to post.

Link to other relevant sites (and tell them)

What is it?

Linking to other relevant sites is a great way to get a link back to your site. When you link to other websites, they are going to be much more willing to give you a link to your site. You don’t necessarily want to do this with very popular sites, because they get enough links and emails that they will probably not give you a link back. Doing this for high-authority sites that aren’t super popular is a great strategy though.

How to do it?

You don’t want to just add a bunch of random links in your own content, so find some websites that you would really like a link to, and link to them naturally within your content. After that, find their contact information and let them know that you linked to their page and that they should check out your post.

You shouldn’t straight out ask them for a link back, because then they will know you linked to them just to get a link. If they like your article, they might link back to you since you did them a favor in the first place.


There are many more great ways to build backlinks to your website than I mentioned, but those are my favorite ways. The most important part about link building is to find what works for you and stick with that strategy. What works for you is most likely going to be different than what works for me.
